Welcome to writing camp! We are excited to start writing and creating with your children. Each morning will begin with a writing prompt to jump-start the day. Campers will have many opportunities to share their writing for feedback. There will be time each day to revisit previous pieces and create new writing.
Monday: Today we will begin to develop our community of writers by taking a memory walk and beginning our dream journey. Each student will receive a journal for all of our writing activities. We will model peer conferencing and giving and receiving feedback as a writer. Students are encouraged to bring these journals home to continue writing each day after camp. Please return the journals every day. Today’s theme will be Dream Catchers, and we will have the opportunity to construct our own.
Tuesday: We will walk to various locations in the Main Street area and consider the dreams of our community. In each place we will make observations and connect them with experiences we have had or dream of having. We will also begin talking about audience and purpose in our writing as we read works by renown authors. Langston Hughes dream poems will be shared. We will practice talking about our writing and those of others.
Wednesday: Today we will spend time at the Littleton Historical Society. We will look into the past to see how we got to the present and then write about the dreams we have for the future. After this journey we will take a haiku hike up Troll, a nature path adjacent to Remick Park. (No Haiku Hiking... Drama production instead.)
Email to Parents after this day...
Good Evening,
Today at writing camp we were faced with both space challenges and a rewarding performance of the Wizard of Oz by the Patchwork Players. We began our day with outdoor writing followed by some Dream Poem creations. Then we explored the Historical Society on the lower level of the Opera House; the girls couldn't get enough time to write about the items they found most interesting. It seemed ever time they turned around there was something that captured their eyes. After our morning snack, we were honored to be invited to attend the performance sponsored by the Weathervane Theatre (I will be sending them a thank you for their thoughtfulness). We ended our day with a reflection on the performance. All of the campers in attendance were brought on stage to help the actors in the performance. The girls had a lot to say about it.
Tomorrow, we really need to spend some time working on our pieces of writing and producing our Dream Flags. So, we will meet at the Littleton High School main entrance at 9:00 instead of the Opera House. Our day will end at Remick Park with a sharing of our writing at about 12:30PM. We will have our lunch from 12:00-12:20 and end our day with a sharing of our writing and then dessert. Though I know how busy our days are, we do invite you to come and share this time with us. Pick-ups will be at the Gazebo at Remick Park at 1PM.
Most of our campers are unable to attend Friday; however, we will have camp from 9AM to 12noon. It will be at the High School once again. Our focus will be on producing a movie of the week's experience. I will share the product with everyone when it is finished. We also hope to compile a collection of camper writing in a book that can be purchased through Lulu.com. I will send information about that when it becomes available.
It has been a great week so far, and I am looking forward to the last few days with our writers!
If you have questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call me at 991-8112.
Thank you,
Jen Carbonneau
Thursday: Our Dream Flags will be created! Students will review their writing from the past several days and construct a Dream Flag that captures their dreams. The day will end with a sharing of our writing at the gazebo at Remick Park. Please join us at 12noon if you are able to do so.
Friday: Those campers able to attend will spend Friday polishing their pieces and creating a slide show of the work we have completed over the course of the week. The slide show will be shared on our group wiki: [[|http://followingyourdreams.wikispaces.com]]. Participants will be encouraged to share their writing throughout the week on our wiki.
Daily drop off and pick up are outside the Opera House. Please send your child with a snack and water bottle (lunch for Tuesday through Thursday). Littleton will be our classroom. If you need to contact us during camp hours please call Jen Carbonneau at 603.991.8112 or after camp hours at 603.444.2072.
